It is a well known fact that the final outcome of a surgery depends upon how well the precautions prescribed by the surgeons are adhered to by the patients. When it comes to precautions pertaining to lap band surgeries, the food you intake needs to be taken care of under all circumstances.
Usually, surgeons would suggest you a weekly/monthly diet plan which you would need to follow. This diet plan is structured according to the individual physique and body requirements of the patient. In this write up however, we try to explore some of the aspects of the diet plan which are common to most patients. We also list down general precautions that need to be taken after lap band surgery.
Generally, the first four weeks after the surgery are the most crucial for patients. Strict precautions are prescribed by surgeons during this period.
The patient is mostly recommended fluid diet. Soup, milk, water, juices and honey are some of the most commonly prescribed food substances during the first four weeks after the surgery. Some patients are also injected with glucose through syringes or by making use of drip bottles. After the first four weeks, the patients are advised to intake soft-chewable eatables for about two weeks. Soft fruits such as bananas, oranges (without fiber) and soft bread (properly chewed) form the chunk of all diet charts for patients during this period.
After the sixth week, patients can go back to their normal diets, with the exception that they would have to completely eliminate a few things which can be disastrous for them after the surgery. Coffee, alcoholic beverages and tea top the list of such foods that need to be avoided at any cost after getting the lap band surgery done. Apart from these, fibrous fruits (such as apple), baked stuff, and things containing high fat content need to be avoided, in order to keep the lap band working properly. Foods containing a high degree of fat can actually lead to the choking of the tract.
Apart from avoiding the above mentioned food items, there are some general precautions that every lap band surgery patient should follow. Eating in small quantities and chewing the food properly top the list of must-do things. Un-chewed food and food swallowed in lumps can lead to blockage and even slippage of the port of the lap band form its place.
The patients have to maintain a regular workout routine so that any blocked food item passes down the tract smoothly. Patients are also advised to not drink during eating, but otherwise, they are supposed to drink a lot of water and other fluids. This is important in order to keep the tract lubricated and allow for a smoother passage of food particles.
