It is essential for them to have a totally new and appropriate eating behavior, especially making the right food choices in their daily life.

Once the patients have completed the operation, they need to undergo a proper healing process with the duration of 4 to 8 weeks. The doctors will be monitoring their conditions carefully. The doctors will request the patients to follow their instructions and recommendations in order for them to recover faster and avoid any complications with the proper schedule.

For the first 3 days right after surgery, the patients may suffer some minor pain but it won’t last long. For the first and second weeks after the operation, it is compulsory for the patients to be on full liquid diet for the purpose of decreasing the pressure on the band and at the same time, preventing the stomach from working too hard. This step is important for the body to get healed faster. The liquid diet suggested includes porridge, soup, milk, yogurt, diluted fruit juice, non-carbonated and sugar free drinks and so on. Solid food is totally restricted during this period.

On the following weeks, the doctors will allow the patients to proceed slowly to have soft food which contains high protein such as oats, eggs, soy, etc. By taking in the soft food in small portion, the patients will be observed whether the soft food is accepted by the body. It depends on the doctor’s recommendation to increase the meal portion gradually by looking at the healing progress of the patients. The portion of food varies from one patient to another based on their individual physical health conditions.

After following the dietary recommendation for 4 to 8 weeks, the patients normally are advised by the doctors to start eating normal food as their bodies are ready to respond to solid food. Although the recovery process almost ends, it is important for the patients to have healthy eating habit. They should make sure that they eat the food slowly and chew the food thoroughly before they swallow.

Besides that, the portion of their meal will be much lesser compared with the portion they have before undergoing the operation. They must discipline themselves by controlling themselves to stop eating once they feel full.
